History
Clare Combined Charities has a rich history dating back to the 19th Century. It was officially formed in 1924 through the merger of five local charities: The Common Pasture (1899), The Charity of William Cadge (1905), The Almshouse Charity and the Bridewell Meadow Charity (1865), The Poor's Land or Goose Croft (1914), and the Collins Dole (1914).
The Charity's original constitution dates from 1882 and was last modified in 1965. Over the years Clare Combined Charities has continued to support the local community through various initiatives.
Activities
Management of Commons: The Charity oversees The Lower Common, The Upper Common and Goosecroft, ensuring these areas are well maintained.
Allotments: The Charity manages allotments behind The Lower Common providing plots for residents to grow their own produce.
Almshouses: The Charity maintains three almshouses in the town, offering housing for local people of modest means.
Educational Grants: The Charity provides grants to support education and other community initiatives.
Environmental Projects: The Charity is involved in environmental projects including working under the Countryside Stewardship scheme.
